This image captures a fiery section of White Pocket, located in northern Arizona’s Vermilion Cliffs. Formed around 150–190 million years ago, this Navajo Sandstone originated from towering desert dunes, slowly compressed into rock over geologic time.
Ancient desert winds left behind undulating patterns and folds that tell the story of shifting earth and prehistoric forces. The vivid reds and oranges are the result of iron oxides, while the lighter bands show purer sands untouched by mineral pigments.
Like a frozen wave of fire, the layered rock seems to flow – a geological memory preserved in stone.
